1939 4:00 Tonight I sleep alone – Eleanor is on her way to Chicago – I’ll miss her horribly… To-day Convocation – my luncheon – helped E pack – got ready for banquet – went – (3/4 of an hr late!) (W.W.) – Bob + Donna + Leonard + I were over at D’s house + drank home-made wine + talked till (4:00) I’ll never forget it.

1940 1:45 WELL, UTLEY – I HOPE WE CAN LAST THROUGH TOMORROW! GEE, YOU DID A SLOPPY JOB ON GRADING – BUT AT LEAST THEY’RE FIGURED OUT – HAPHAZARD OR NOT! – THE PRESSURE IS BEING PUT ON – I WISH I WERE READY FOR IT – MIGHT BE FUN – SKIT “ART EXHIBIT” – (UGH) – STAGE SETS – WHAT NEXT! DON’T I EVER GET TO PLAN MY COURSES?

1941 Tues – Lousy Lecture – Leonard again. “Good Night” – I know he has very broad shoulders. I looked at them all during speech

1942 WED LEONARD HAD DALE’S CAR. WE COULDN’T GET IT STARTED IN TIME TO GO AFTER DONNA; SHE WANTS US TO GO ON A PICNIC Satiddy… I ADORE Leonard… HOW CAN THIS EVER end?

1943 THURS THE DAY I GOT THE NASTY CINDER IN MY EYE… GEE, IT WAS EXCRUCIATING… VIC TOOK ME TO THE MIDSHIPMEN’S SHOW IT WAS DARN GOOD… MY FRIENDS WHO WANTED A DATE, WERE THERE. AND WITH GELS. WORKED ON THE COVER.

SEPTEMBER 14

1939 I hope there won’t be many more days as unbearably hot as the last few. – Went to a tea to-day. – And saw “Pygmalion”.

1940 10:30 And I am only beginning to contemplate getting some work done! It’s always so hard to start… I had fun today cleaning up my room, washing my hair, clothes… I really enjoy Mrs. Reeves a lot. I really wonder what “Robert” is like –

1941 Sun Mother + I went to church – Clara + I went to Big-Little Sister tea – Listened to records that Mr. Lee played for us – saw Leonard. Went to Man Power with Marg + Sara + Eunice.

1942 MON SAW Sary – AT LAST… QUITE UNSATISFACTORY. KATHRINE G. WENT WITH US TO THE Pied Piper… (Leonard HAD spoiled IT FOR ME, BY TELLING ME THE ENDING) I WROTE SCRIPT today… I HOPE I GO TO Jack TEAGARDEN… MAYBE LIVING IN CHICAGO WOULD BE FUN FOR A WHILE…

1943 TUES JOHN TOOK ME TO THE TOWN CLUB TO PLAY BINGO… I ALMOST WON THE $75 BOND! – ATE DINNER AT D.J’S. – MARGE SCOTT CONGRATULATED ME… I SAID NOT QUITE. LEONARD HAD WRITTEN HER WHEN THEY WERE MARRIED. HE IS SWEETER. MORE THOUGHTFUL.

AUGUST 11

1939 12:00 Started on the dummy of the yearbook today – I’m not as scared as I was. Mr. Bailin asked me to write the ad for the newspaper another element of the new shop! I’m glad… We played bridge at Terry’s

1940 1:15 Perhaps it would have been less dangerous to have gone out w/ Bill tonight (or Hunk) Howard took pictures this morning + we ran them tonight… He said he wished the 1940 Edda were to do over! My God.

1941 12- I hope I’ve done the right thing. I’ve decided to stay at Auggie. Talked w/ Mr. Eide + Granskau. They were so swell. I have a lot to live up to… Leonard’s brother was killed in Chicago. I feel so bad… He is away..

1942 11:00 GEE, Baby, WE DIDN’T DO MUCH with TODAY * WENT SWIMMING with DAVID… (date for thurs.) GOT BURNED – VAMPED A 4 yr OLD BOY… WENT out TO SCHOOL; DIDN’T see MISTER PAYNE

 1939 Sunday 12:00 Muddled. Felt upset all morning finally got to work over my dr. board. Karl + D + Mary + Lee were over – Eleanor + I went to a movie – I just finished reading Jamaica Inn

1940 1:45 I wish I had stayed home – I wish to hell I’d stayed home… Lousy picnic… “my friends” wanted to drive up to Luverne. Which was certainly all right. They had such fun dancing with pickups – which wasn’t all right. I was absolutely nauseated.

1943 11:30 Got a special from Eleanor this morning. Wants to know when I'll be in Chicago! - I wrote her to come to New York. - Gee, I hate to make decisions. They asked me to stay + play in "Hey Fever" - Would almost like to -

1942 THURS ha – DAVY THOUGHT I WAS A LITTLE HIGH ON ONE Tom Collins… (GEE HE SHOULD HAVE WITNESSED MY CAPACITY LAST NIGHT!) WE WENT TO THE OPENING of THE INSTRUCTORS’ CLUB! QUITE FUN… MET A LT. COLONEL… FROM TEXAS. GEE Davy IS A JEALOUS one

1943 FRI MY DRESS CAME FROM HOME. IT FITS BEAUTIFULLY, HOW MOTHER DOES IT. I COULD HARDLY TALK TODAY, MY THROAT WAS SO SORE. WE FOLIO-ED THE BOOK… MRS. Stote TOLD US ABOUT PARIS + LONDON – I CAN’T QUITE FEATURE HER RELATIONSHIP w/ HER husband!

JULY 26

1939 Half a year gone - + so much has happened! – Karl + Dorothy are here – They want to know when I’m coming to Chicago

1940 Fri Hell – Eleanor phoned from Chicago tonight she can’t come home for her vacation this week, after all – I feel worse about her being disappointed than at our being disappointed

+ And a lot more happened this year! I hope it won’t be too long  -

1941 1:00 Well kid, the wheels are turning. This morning I got a letter from Ren saying Dayton’s + Auggie had welcome on their doormats + this aft, a letter from Boston Store saying Mlle wired them I got a tie for 1st! – Mike got home safely tonight. I’m happy, if a little confused

1942 SUN WE ALL WENT TO CHURCH TODAY… (I DIDN’T WEAR STOCKINGS, EITHER!) – WE HAD WILMER + OLGA OVER FOR DINNER… WE SHOULD HAVE HAD SOME SOLDIERS, too. I GOT SOME SHERBET. WENT OVER TO Shirlee’s AND SOLDIERS… Damn MISTER PAYNE DIDN’T EVEN call.

1943 MON I HIT THE JACKPOT- LETTERS FROM LEONARD (WHO PRACTICALLY GOT HIMSELF COURT MARSHALED) FROM ELEANOR, CLARA, LARRY + HERMAN (WHO SOLD AN ARTICLE TO Esquire) – I ANSWERED MR. EIDE and WE TODAY; Herman + LARRY, too. MY LEGS ARE A mess.

JUNE 29

1939 Thursday 10:00 Eleanor is home! I’m so very glad she didn’t stay in Chicago. I worked out at school most of the day. E + Mother + I went to a show.

1940 1:30 Saturday.. For an ecstatic moment I was really happy this morning – Folks had a party for anniversary – Clara upset me completely again… I no sooner get Leonard off my mind than something happens again! He told her he was going to the Hospital Monday - + not to tell me… I know I must quit worrying!

1941 MIKE + I SLEPT UNTIL 11 THIS MORNING BEST PART OF THE DAY WAS TURKEY FOR DINNER… (THE REHEARSAL OF SORORITY HOUSE HAD AN ORDER VERY SIMILAR) WROTE LETTERS – SAW HENRY! – DAMN.

1942 MON WOULD LIKE TO HAVE KISSED WILBER g’bye. HE’S SO DARN SWEET… I NEVER WANT TO SEE HIM, IF THE ARMY TAKES ANY of THAT away. LEONARD DIDN’T go TO RAPID CITY… THANK GOD. I ACTED LIKE A NIT-WIT ALL DAY TODAY… WENT AROUND ASKING FOOLISH QUESTIONS.

1943 TUES By some mechanism that takes care of those things, I’m adapting myself to the thought of not seeing Leonard – for a while, anyhow. Herman came over + went to the show with Sully + me. It rained, thank God as we came back.

 

 

JUNE 25

1939 12:15 – to-day – Eleanor telephoned from Chicago – she can have a job there – It would be awful without her – but probably her best bet – Mr. Eide phoned this aft. - + my job is fixed! – I’m so glad. – Talked with H. Richards. So much has happened.

1940 1:00 Tues Well – we finished at 5 this afternoon! – It isn’t so hot either… We plan to read it tomorrow night to Bob, Emil, Leonard + Del in the back yd, after a picnic supper. Now Bob can’t come. I didn’t like his attitude… Too Bad we can’t ask Bill. But that would be messy!

1941 HAD fun today – little leery about things this morning (especially $125!) But I guess its all okay. Went swimming with a very nice fella – sort of a date tonight – Good Night – I have a part

1942 Thurs. Leonard is absolutely WILD. Would not leave until I kissed him goodnight (for about the 5th time)He + Wilber both were at the door Thought he’d gone! – Talked w/ V.R.N.

1943 FRI Oh God, what a day. One of the worst I’ve ever had… I’ll never do anything in the Art Dept again! – Mrs. Stote was wonderful. I talked to Herman + got just as much understanding as I expected. We saw H.M.S. Pinafore. Had beer + corned beef sandwiches.

JUNE 22

1939 11:45 Practically wore myself out finishing the last sleeve of my sweater… I really put in a day – washed floors cleaned davenport, etc. – Tonight I played Rhapsody in Blue over about 3 times… It made me lonesome.

1940 Sunday Rainy… dark… windy… cold… lonesome. I was absolutely worthless all day. I tried to sleep – couldn’t… Yet I was glad to be alone… Was out w/ Spence. He made me feel so ashamed… I haven’t been doing a thing; he works 11 hrs a day.

1941 Riding on Challenger – East – Eleanor + I had fun in Chicago. I saw Mills exhibit… walked my feet off… Maybe we’ll go to New York next year –

1942 Tues R.H. #, D.J. + I went bike riding from 8:30 – 12:00 – Could have had a date w/ Wilber. Attended a dwk’s funeral

1943 WED I was owly this morning, querulous. Herman + I ate at Toffeneti’s. Argued. I felt better, strangely enough. We went to Central Park for the Band Concert… I’ll be glad when he goes for a special reason.

JUNE 21

1939 11:30 Well, Monday night’s glammer boy has left for Minneapolis – I’ll probably never see him again – But it was perfect – I don’t know if I’ll ever have a date with Ray either, for that matter – I may get another job at school!

1940 12:00 Clara came in today + we rewrote first act… I suppose we must get it revised + sent to Krause… The incredible happened… Jo, Peg + I went swimming + so did Bill ! – He was marvelous… Poised, friendly, assured.

1941 Sun – In Chicago. – uneventful trip – didn’t get “The Waltz” learned. –

1942 Sun God, I’m a bitch. I don’t deserve to have anything nice happen to me – like going to the dance tomorrow. Saw Tortilla Flats.

1943 MON (Evidently a dull day! I can’t remember) I wrote to Leonard again – (heard from him. He’s probably going this week) took it out to mail. Walked down + got us cupcakes.

JUNE 17

1939 SAT. Eleanor went to Chicago – I literally got her ready – she was certainly a scatter-brained – I wanted to go too – But she should be away from all of us – again no date!

1940 11:30 Mon God… hot… confused… What should I do?… Should I keep on w/ Bill?… Is it right?… Blah. Leonard was at Hal Kemp tonight with some little babe. I saw him this afternoon… He is young.

1941 D.J., Iver, Clara + I had a picnic… went to Symphony enjoyed myself.

1942 Wed Society of Lower Basin Street… Virginia is back. She + Peggy were over tonight for a while. She’s thin + brown.

1943 THURS First Fashion Group Luncheon I’ve enjoyed… Mrs. Stote took Miss Prinzing from McCreey’s. We had martinis first. (I was blind for the first half of the program) Mrs. Stote showed me her new apartment

JUNE 2

1939 Friday – Ray came after me. What a day – Waited for Mr. Eide to help me all morning + couldn’t work this aft, because of Electrician, etc. Tonight Mr. Eide + the fellows shot pictures while I was “working”

1940 11:00 I’m not waiting up for the 12 o’ clock plane tonight… I’m really tired – I guess its relief setting in… it was Baccalaureate this A.M…. Granskow gave a perfectly marv talk – it seems to epitomize for me what has been trying to come through for 4 yrs.

1941 10:30 CHICAGO – MOTHER + I WERE LAZY THIS MORNING LAY IN BED IN TALKED BEFORE WE WENT OUT GALAVANTING… I TOLD HER ABOUT LEONARD + SHE WAS VERY UNDERSTANDING… I ONLY WISH I’D “TALKED” TO HER BEFORE –

1942 Tues 11:30 Bob + I cleaned up the Art Room He got his reclarification – Letter from Lefty. We heard from Emil John, Bob + I went to La Purchase this aft. .. Wasted this Evening

1943 Wed 3:00 Fun la! – Astor Roof – Harry James – with Mr. Spitznagel. – called this morning – what a guy. (he always seems vaguely preoccupied though) Then we went up + sat on the R.C.A. roof + talked, felt cool + lovely… Went to Village Vanguard… Leadbelly, chanteuse, etc. We walked + walked. 

JUNE 1

1939 12:30 Thursday did Garbo + Marxes to-day. – people kept popping in; but it was quiet-er than usual – I think Mr. Spitznagel is swell.

1940 1:00 This morning I felt the same agonizing anticipation that a five year old feels about Christmas… The Books are terribly close to the way I “dreamed” them. It is one of the Biggest things that’s ever happened to me. We had our dinner at C. Shop… Spence + I saw W. Bridge. I’ll never forget Leonard.

1941 12:30 AND HERE WE ALL ARE IN CHICAGO… HAVEN’T SEEN ELEANOR – YET – STARTED ABOUT 6:00 THIS MORNING – GOT IN ABOUT 10:00 – I DROWSED AND THOUGHT ABOUT LEONARD – GEE, HE’S GOING TO COMPLICATE MY LIFE, I’M AFRAID – BUT WHO WANTS MERELY SERENITY? –

1942 Mon Registered 5 Art stoonts… Rilly don’t want to teach Summer School very long… Then What? ? ? – Bill + Leonard, Peggy came over – Then John + Bob!… We got D.J. – Some fun.

1943 Tues – Gee, I’m a wreck. Felt awful most of the day… typed like crazy on those fool radio scripts for Mrs. S. Feel very monosyllabic. Didn’t get to Donna’s Graduation, I hate subways.

 

MAY 31

1939 Wednesday 12:00 Worked all day again - Got along swell - Its going to be fun. - Came home + cleaned up - went to creative wr. for the last time + read my one-act play - Went down with Eide + transferred some cart.
1940 1:10 Well, let's hope the Eddas are on that Minneapolis truck tonight + that they'll get here tomorrow morning. I really don't know if I could take it if they didn't come tomorrow!... I am quite surprised I actually wrote my Bible term paper today!
1941 11:30 I'm really a mess... thought everything was figured out + settled - found myself thinking of Leonard + re-hashing everything that happened... I am so terrible tired + I don't even want to go to Chicago
1942 Sun God, I nauseate myself - I have utterly no resistance! John is slightly wolfy, but I could have put up a better defense! Leonard don't you ever worry about me!
1943 Mon Got up + washed my hair. (Haven't been able to sleep really LATE) Sun bathed... Got a lovely Leonard letter (Note to Postman "I love this girl") Herman brought over Louise... We went to dinner, later. I rather resent the time I had to spend on him.

APRIL 13

1939 11:10 Ran all the way out to school for an 8 o'clock class we didn't have! - Mother cut out my formal - today - I have to give a speech at the banquet! - Egad! - Ray + I went for a ride...
1940 Sat 2:30 - I better concentrate on Leonard or someone else pretty hard... Bill is too darn persuasive. He certainly messes up my little routine of things! (It was Bill's Birthday)
1941 Easter in Chicago again... Boul Mich - only sunny + beautiful, this time. The sermon was wonderful... Church impressive... stain glass - Ginny + Dotty ate dinner with us - (blah) at Jaques' - Dubbonet cocktail - Wow - Home on this forlorn train -
1942 Mon - We're starting oils in techniques class. Gee, wish I knew more about it! Went to fashion show. Backed the "Baby"... D.J. + I went bike riding - ha. Helped w/ Payne Post
1943 Tues Gee, I feel awful. Went over to Brooklyn - A+S. 200 luncheon this noon of B. Paper Editor. Had to leave during the speech. Pressed clothes tonight ate an orange, read some book

APRIL 10

1939 2:45 - Worked all day. - 8:00 till 5:00 - Got home about 5:30 - Started getting ready washed out clothes, took a bath + stuff Joyful anticipation - But swell fun. - Marie is sleeping with me... She + Mick. I wish I knew exactly what Ray thinks of me.
1940 Wed... Krause thinks my copy is swell... I'm really pretty glad... proofread it after creative writing - I'm rather mad - Spence asked me to J. S. Blah
1941 Thurs I don't believe it, but here I am in Chicago... Eleanor looks so sweet... new Dobbs hat - bl. Suit... Sari + I had fun acting silly on the train... We were a little scared, though, I guess - Hamburgers at O'Conell's
1942 Friday 12:00 I suppose I should have kept out of this J.S. banquet; let them stir around by themselves - but golly... Worked all day on it. Tonight, too. I'm dead. Hope I last through tomorrow.
1943 SAT I'M LONESOME. NOT MUCH POINT TO ANYTHING. WISH THIS INTERVAL WERE OVER. GLAD WHEN I WON'T HAVE TO WORK ON SATIDY MORNINGS. SLEPT SOME THIS AFT. WASHED ME UP TONIGHT SPIC + SPAN. BOB + PEG WENT TO A DANCE AT THE Ritz!

MARCH 23

1939 10:30 Mary stayed + stayed + I was so sleepy! Got the material for the Football banquet Sat Night. I only wish I were going to the darn thing! I felt awful this aft. Eleanor is out w/ Ed.
1940 Sat. Who'd have thought that Mary + I would see each other in Chicago a yr ago? - She came over this morning... I met Eleanor + Dorothy for lunch at Field's - Then we went to "The Man Who Came to Dinner" - which was uproarious. v. dirty, v. funny! - It would have been enough, but Eleanor insisted we go out again to-night. It is terribly cold!
1941 11:45 - Wish I could live today over again - Folks came down (with Sari) + we went to Sioux City. A. Marg + E. Dillon were both ill. They looked awful. (It must make mother feel bad)... We had gardenias. - I'm enthralled with Kitty Foyle - God, what guts - It was like Jo. - Tomorrow REALITY.
1942 MON Met Margie down town this noon for lunch... She's happy but I don't envy her in the slightest - 
1943 TUES MICKEY INFLUENCED ME TO GO TO A MOVIE AT WHICH WE BOTH wept VIOLENTLY AND ENJOYED COMPLETELY... I RE-WROTE AN Editorial TODAY WITH MRS. DAHL... SHE ISN'T BAD, BUT I'M GLAD I'M NOT WORKING WITH HER... MR. Haire EMBARRASSED ME COMPLETELY AT THE OFFICE MEETING TODAY. I BLUSHED FURIOUSLY...

MARCH 22

1939 11:10 Lucky I - my oration + I are going to Aberdeen - I'm quite sure I've certainly sweat blood over that thing I read it to better do my writing in the daytime - I fouled away the whole afternoon. Ray S. took me for a ride + we looked at the falls. It was so swell out - After the lecture to night, Stan, Carp, Jake + I ate ice cream
1940 Fri Here I am sleeping with Eleanor in Chicago! - it is big + dirty + strong... I think I like it... We went out to Karls for dinner tonight... I wish I hadn't been so tired... Connie "entertained" me this aft. I got cleaned up this morning, we met E. for lunch. 
1941 10:55 Well, possibly I can try a little vicarious living in "Kitty Foyle" - God knows I need something to get away from myself  Practice Practice Practice - God, I wish those damn things were over! ----
1942 11:00 O-H-H-H THAT I HAD BEEN ANNIHILATED AT BIRTH! - WHY DID I SUGGEST OUR GOING DOWN TO THE HEN. OF COURSE LEONARD + R.H. # CAME IN AS I KNEW THEY WOULD. PRETTY DAMN OBVIOUS - I'M SO DUMB - AND AFTER WEDNESDAY TOO
1943 12:00 and Peggy isn't home yet. I should be in bed, asleep, but I wrote to Leonard, Eleanor + Don... today wasn't bad. I think I'll like Mrs. Stotes. (Migosh, she looks like me) I rewrote. Was to have gone out in the Market. I want to make good.

MARCH 16

1939 11:40 Thurs I think maybe I'm getting started not that I accomplished anything. But Ray + Wyman hekkled me to pieces this aft. Why is it everyone likes to tease me? I'm getting sick of it - P. Practice tonight then after b. ball game at S.F.C. Clara + I went over to Tommy's for M. Milks
1940 Sat 12:30 Mary Anne came today on her way to the Art Institute - She is exactly the same. But with more definite, stronger purpose. I'll probably see her in Chicago...
1941 10:45 Sun night + as usual I"m torn between the idea of working + bed. - So I'm going to compromise + work in bed (I hope!) - Well, my appetite was certainly not affected by my "broken heart" - tsk tsk - Waited all day for Frederic. - Of course, he didn't materialize.
1942 MON Yes, I was tired today... Just about went to sleep posing for sketch class... Peg and I went to Sullivans Travels... Out to Hen... talked...
1943 TUES 12:40 LOW EBB: MR. KRIKORIAN "LET ME KNOW" - in the MAIL, THE COWARD... I SHOULDN'T BE SO disappointed, BUT I AM. MISS GIBBONS WAS ALSO AT A FASHION MEETING WHEN I ARRIVED AT 9:30 THIS MORNING. I CHECKED BACK WITH HAUSNER + LUCY + THEN CAME HOME - WET + DEPRESSED. CLEANED UP THE Room - sent in McCann-Erikson application + played bridge

MARCH 6

1939 10:40 This can't be me because I feel so well - Someone gently shoved me a few inches forward in the hall I turned around + he walked down the stairs without even looking my way - (It must have been my frilly fresh white blouse) Later I interviewed him for the Mirror... I'm not so afraid of him any more - The Plays even off swell - I'm going to do the rations for the F.B. Banquet again 25th - It would save a lot of problems if I got a date.
1940 Wed. I have suddenly realized it's only 2 weeks until vacation + Chicago (supposedly!) How can I get everything done?
1941 Thursday - And I suddenly realize (like hell - I've been counting the days) its 4 weeks until Easter Vacation + Chicago. Darn, I'd still like to put on the Terrible Mech, too. - I'd have to re-write THAT - worked 8:00-6:30. 8:11:00.
1942 Friday! Civic Music. All I did was sit there + think about Leonard, dammit! Did the patterns over for R.N. Phillips nursery... I'd better put in a hill. We printed Etchings. - Spring today.
1943 1:00 SAT. (I WONDER where LEONARD IS - IF HE'S BEEN ASSIGNED TO A BASE YET)... FIRST BLOW; I WAS READY TO ACCEPT Scholastic, BUT THEY DON'T WANT ME UNTIL MAY 16! - HELL, I WANTED TO START WORK Monday... IT WAS A WET, miserable, HORRIBLE DAY... DIDN'T ANTICIPATE ENJOYING MYSELF, BUT I DID. Jarv + I WENT TO DINNER + a show.

FEBRUARY 5

1939 Sun 10:45 - If I wake up with pneumonia tomorrow it's because I washed my hair today - cold + all. - It was worth it. All I did today was start my oration + knit - 
1940 Monday 11:30 - Designed 1 page at least - I think it is good - title page. I'd better speed up. Gregory Tucker is "on campus" Met him today. Okay Joe. He played tonight
1941 Wed THANK GOODNESS BRIDGE CLUB... I THINK IT IS ABOUT NICEST THAT'S "BEEN HAD" - (SUCH CONCEIT) ... VERY COY VALENTINE THEME, THE RASPBERRY SHERBET WAS SO HARD, WE HAD TO "CARVE" IT... HENRY CALLED. - FREDDIE CALLED.... UNHAPPY ABOUT SOMETHING - VERY TIRED... HOPE I CAN SLEEP -
1942 Thurs Sara hasn't called. I suppose she's left for Chicago, though - 2nd time I've stayed home this week! Tsk. Tsk. Got in on Sets + Costumes
