AUGUST 11

1939 12:00 Started on the dummy of the yearbook today – I’m not as scared as I was. Mr. Bailin asked me to write the ad for the newspaper another element of the new shop! I’m glad… We played bridge at Terry’s

1940 1:15 Perhaps it would have been less dangerous to have gone out w/ Bill tonight (or Hunk) Howard took pictures this morning + we ran them tonight… He said he wished the 1940 Edda were to do over! My God.

1941 12- I hope I’ve done the right thing. I’ve decided to stay at Auggie. Talked w/ Mr. Eide + Granskau. They were so swell. I have a lot to live up to… Leonard’s brother was killed in Chicago. I feel so bad… He is away..

1942 11:00 GEE, Baby, WE DIDN’T DO MUCH with TODAY * WENT SWIMMING with DAVID… (date for thurs.) GOT BURNED – VAMPED A 4 yr OLD BOY… WENT out TO SCHOOL; DIDN’T see MISTER PAYNE

1940 12:00 Bob, Leonard, Emil + I went to My S. My Son this afternoon… I went out to school… at last had the opportunity to tell Leonard that what he wrote in my Edda was the nicest thing that has ever happened to me… He bolted before I could say the rest; he was floored, I think – + a little scared… I talked to Kenny

1941 Minneapolis – Bob. Mr. Witmer – swell – okay Joe – told me to go to New York! – said I could do anything I wanted to! Still think I want to be at Auggie n. yr.

JUNE 1

1939 12:30 Thursday did Garbo + Marxes to-day. – people kept popping in; but it was quiet-er than usual – I think Mr. Spitznagel is swell.

1940 1:00 This morning I felt the same agonizing anticipation that a five year old feels about Christmas… The Books are terribly close to the way I “dreamed” them. It is one of the Biggest things that’s ever happened to me. We had our dinner at C. Shop… Spence + I saw W. Bridge. I’ll never forget Leonard.

1941 12:30 AND HERE WE ALL ARE IN CHICAGO… HAVEN’T SEEN ELEANOR – YET – STARTED ABOUT 6:00 THIS MORNING – GOT IN ABOUT 10:00 – I DROWSED AND THOUGHT ABOUT LEONARD – GEE, HE’S GOING TO COMPLICATE MY LIFE, I’M AFRAID – BUT WHO WANTS MERELY SERENITY? –

1942 Mon Registered 5 Art stoonts… Rilly don’t want to teach Summer School very long… Then What? ? ? – Bill + Leonard, Peggy came over – Then John + Bob!… We got D.J. – Some fun.

1943 Tues – Gee, I’m a wreck. Felt awful most of the day… typed like crazy on those fool radio scripts for Mrs. S. Feel very monosyllabic. Didn’t get to Donna’s Graduation, I hate subways.

1939 Wednesday 12:00 Worked all day again - Got along swell - Its going to be fun. - Came home + cleaned up - went to creative wr. for the last time + read my one-act play - Went down with Eide + transferred some cart.
1940 1:10 Well, let's hope the Eddas are on that Minneapolis truck tonight + that they'll get here tomorrow morning. I really don't know if I could take it if they didn't come tomorrow!... I am quite surprised I actually wrote my Bible term paper today!
1941 11:30 I'm really a mess... thought everything was figured out + settled - found myself thinking of Leonard + re-hashing everything that happened... I am so terrible tired + I don't even want to go to Chicago
1942 Sun God, I nauseate myself - I have utterly no resistance! John is slightly wolfy, but I could have put up a better defense! Leonard don't you ever worry about me!
1943 Mon Got up + washed my hair. (Haven't been able to sleep really LATE) Sun bathed... Got a lovely Leonard letter (Note to Postman "I love this girl") Herman brought over Louise... We went to dinner, later. I rather resent the time I had to spend on him.

MAY 29

1939 Monday Wrote Sh. Test from 8:30 till 12:00. Practiced on Art Room Walls. - Ray + I went out to Neptune + watched high school from till 10:00 - then Mr. Eide + I got some cartoons on the walls - Also went to Picnic + to Philos
1940 Wed. I am sick with disappointment and disgust. The Eddas didn't come and I started to have a marvelous time at the reception till M.T. had to leave + go r. skating! - I did so want to do something afterward too - (Gee, I wish I could go to the dance tomorrow)
1941 12:00 - Well, its over. Seems so odd to just shut the door on one 9 months - a whole phase of my existence - I've never had a comparable amt. of time go so swiftly... Everyone was so sweet -
1942 Fri We went over to the U. - very impressive... Joe Johnson "waltz-houred" up... That was fun. - We came home, ate early + saw the Male Animal - had a glass of beer
1943 Sat I picked up a cute little Ensign down on a park bench on Riverside. (He is so young!) I was eating an apple reading Collier. I accomplished a lot of shopping this morning... Got some red Whippersnappers. I think I'll like

1940 Thurs. The Edda is in a horrible mess... Kenny has sold exactly 1/2 enough ads - I wish I knew what to do!... Made a lot of posters... Rained to beat anything this aft... Got caught in it... Ushered at C. Music deal tonight -
1941 11- Wish it was a wk from today - I feel awful. - Fell off the sets (a folding chair) nearly amputated an arm - ha... ha - ha (I'm going to have a PRACTICE TEACHER! - ------ Oh yes, Fred was married today - I barely remember him.
1942 SAT 1:20 READING Buddenbrooks is entertaining, but not what I'd consider a no. 1  8 at Eve! I wonder if Leonard was writing or if someone had him out R. Date... Well, filled classes this aft. - Summer School Schedule figgered out. -
1943 SUN Was quiet, letter writing + lonesome to be home this Sunday... But Stan McCormick called about 6:00. Took Peg + me to dinner... He's certainly not changed; (nor smoother) Then Peg + I went to the West End Bar to meet Jarv + his brother.
