1939 12:00 – Heard Buck Whittmore + Jack Loew’s piano concert. – Rosalind introduced us afterwards. – It was really a thrill – Marg + Sari + I ate down town together – I find my “lesson plans” are not complete enough.

1940 11:30 THANK GOD IT’S FRIDAY TOMORROW! – AND DADDY’LL BE AFTER ME AT 4:00 – GEE, I HOPE WE GET HOME EARLY! – I WISH I WERE SPENDING THE WEEK-END AT HOME, NOT GOING UP TO STATE. BUT MAYBE I’LL HAVE SOME FUN ANYHOW – TODAY WAS PRETTY BAD – IF ONLY I’D FIGURE OUT WHAT I’M GOING TO TEACH FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT! – OHH, I HAD A DATE TONIGHT – BUT HE DOESN’T DANCE!

1941 11:00 Well, I better start in on the agony haven’t written for weeks… Dusted this morning… could barely get to school… Peggy B + I had a wild time getting out this aft too! – D.J. went down to Civic Theater – Got enlisted

1942 1:20 [JUST ONE MORE NIGHT ON THE DAVENPORT, THANK HEAVEN!] GEE, I LOVE JUST BEING WITH Leonard… WE WENT TO “Tales of MANHATTAN”… SAT DOWN AT THE Chocolate Shop UNTIL 11:00, WALKED HOME IN THE COLD, MOONLIT NIGHT… THE FOLKS WERE STILL UP, SO WE WERE SLIGHTLY frustrated… BUT NOT SERIOUSLY… I STEPPED neatly OFF MY SHIFT scaffolding – SPILLED PAINT ALL OVER. MY STYLE-SHOW FRIEND STOPPED IN AT THE Tip Top. TOO HIGH-PRE.

OCTOBER 11

1939 Wed Carp asked me to go to the banquet with him. Now I don’t know what to do. – Suppose it will be Bob. I like both of the fellows. – shouldn’t want to hurt either.

1940 1:00 Thank you, God, for letting me have moment like I’ve had today… For just being able to sit downstairs (like I was a minute ago) with Bob + Leonard… just incoherently grateful for their presence… For having fun with a different W.W. in Sioux City… for riding home with Ray + Wyman. And for Leonard.

1941 Sat Convocation (which I didn’t make) Variety show – banquet (programs + flowers) Game – 66-6 – Show – Boyer

1942 SUN 12:05 (Well, it’s about time I started writing in here again!) Today would have been lovely if Eleanor hadn’t turned neurotic at Breakfast! I went to church by myself. (but met Bob) Granskau was wonderful. Tea this afternoon with Chils + Marie – And Bob Rief + I went out to school to see Mr. Eide’s stuff tonight.

1943 MON Time! Time! Time! – Oh God – I wish I were free of it… I read Thomas Wolfe today… which shouldn’t be done by the clock! … Weezie + Peg were so slow they missed their chance for dates… my cover proofs are good!

SEPTEMBER 22

1939 Spent the day looking for people + not finding ‘em. I’ll have to go out to school tomorrow! – long time at my window to-night thinking about home-coming. (If only I were sure of a date!)

1940 Sun 12:30 I’d almost forgotten how it felt to be “bossed” – well I remember now, vividly – Maybe it was my fault – but I don’t think so… E. LEFT ON 5:30 TRAIN. – D.J. TOOK ME for a ride tonight we ate popcorn. I left a note for Bill

1941 11:00? (RUSSIA HAS PRACTICALLY FALLEN… IS AT LEAST WEAKENED TERRIBLY… WHERE IS THIS INSANITY TO END?) – I CERTAINLY DIDN’T CURB MY APPETITE AS I HAD INTENDED TO – TSK, TSK. – DAY DIDN’T GO BADLY AT ALL… BOB + I LISTENED TO BACH’S CONTATA + FUGUE… WROTE ELEANOR

1943 WED I’M GETTING MORE + MORE organized AGAIN, I THINK… [THANK GOODNESS…] PEG + I WENT FOR A WALK ALONG THE RIVER – SO BEAUTIFUL + SHINY WITH LIGHTS… HIGH SCHOOL BOYS WANTED TO PICK US UP. WE SHYLY DEMURRED… ATE WITH HERMAN. HE WAS VERA CURIOUS ABOUT Leonard.

SEPTEMBER 20

1939 Went to Creative Writing – I guess I’ll be taking it for another year – B. Funey is in the class – Carp + Bob + I listened to B.L. + I.L. fight afterwards

1940 FRI GEE, home again – sleeping with Eleanor – seems almost as if we’d never been gone, really… Dragged her out to school where she met D.Gregory. Saw Howard, Bob, Mr. E. – it rained – we talked

1941 2:00 I AM A HELLUVA GAL… I REVOLT ME… I AM NEVER HAPPY WITH WHAT I HAVE – MR. S. STOPPED IN THIS MORNING… LOVE HIM… SWELL GUY… HAS A LITTLE JOB UP AT Cole’s FOR ME… CHILS + MARIE WERE OVER FOR DINNER; WE WENT TO THE GAME + TO A MOVIE –

1942 SUN I THINK IT WAS THIS DAY I WAS SO ACUTELY tortured… MY GOD! – IT WAS TERRIBLE. HOW CAN Eleanor DO WHAT SHE DOES… MADE EVERYTHING COMPLETELY miserable FOR ME. –

1943 MON PAIN + DESOLATION. I WAS FULL OF SADNESS + HEARTSICK WHEN I GOT BACK; THEN BARBARA IS GOING BACK TO TEXAS. I MOVED IN with PEG + LOIS + DONNA… I HOPE IT WILL WORK OUT OKAY. I’M SOUL-TIRED.

SEPTEMBER 16

1939 – Tonight E + I drove for an hr + half hour trying to find a pk. Place to see Carole Lombard in a movie. It was worth it.

1940 Monday – which lived up to its reputation. I thought I was going to go to sleep for sure in faculty meeting – agony – Dorothy’s sister was here who is going to Minn! Seemed nice to converse with a contemporary. MARG IS GETTING MARRIED! ELEANOR IS COMING!

1941 And the plane is over head… Does to me what wild geese do. Like to come home in it Some Day. – Didn’t accompli much today. I’d better step up production; If I’m to get any place – feel fat!

1942 WED WROTE TO HAAKENSON while LISTENING TO BASIN STREET… FINISHED DAMN’ OLE’ RADIO SCRIPTS… PHOOEY… NAUSEATE ME AFTER 3 of EM… GOT ‘EM MAILED… WE SAW Peggy OFF AT 5:20… SHE WASN’T PHASED… GAVE HER SOME CANDY and “NEW YORKER” – SAW MR. P, too.

1943 THURS MOTHER + ELEANOR + I WENT TO DINNER AT the TOWN CLUB… IT WAS NICE. I READ THEM SOME OF LEONARD’S SO BEAUTIFUL Letter. I WISH MOTHER NEW HIM BETTER, REALLY. SHIRLEY + BETTY HANSON, VIRGINIA, D.J. WERE OVER. IT WAS VERY NICE. I CLEANED THE HOUSE.

SEPTEMBER 13

1939 – gall + wormwood! – Ray had Holly at the dance last night + Leonard had Blossom! – What I need is a man! – I’m exhausted. – Big – Little S. too. We washed dishes to-night – Lime sherbet + gingerale + choc. cookies – I wore my blue B. shoes

1940 Friday 12:00 – Wrote 5 letters… hope I get some returns… Got a swell letter from Eleanor. She will probably be home Sun morning. Got to rationalizing – wanted to be there, but after I talked to Mother, my mind was changed… I’ll probably appreciate it more.

1941 Sat Oh Damn! – Every time I wear that formal I get a frustrated feeling afterward! – Formal Reception – Maybe its that I’m so tired I could spit.

1942 1:00 I WORE IT AGAIN today TO USHER AT PEGGYS RECITAL… SHES SO VERY WONDERFUL… SHE’LL SURELY MAKE THE GRADE! – WISH, IN A WAY, I WERE GOING with HER… WENT TO DINNER WITH BOB REIF… HE’S RILLY AN INTERESTING FELLA. WE SAW A BOB HOPE MOVIE AND HAD COKES IN THE KITCHEN…

1943 MON Oh God, like an amputation without anesthetic…I’m not all me when I’m not with Leonard. He called at 10:00. I cried. Mother said I mussn’t. We went down in the cab alone together. I tried to be good. He hated leaving, I know. I got my reservation. How can I leave?

SEPTEMBER 12

1939 Dammit! Every time the phone rings I think its Ray. – Saw him to-day out at school. – He came up behind me and practically bowled me over! – I thought he had left town. – I was quite nice to him; but apparently not nice enough?

1940 11:00 Not even a boring teachers institute could spoil the wonderful way I feel… Its completely inexplicable… Saw Wyman + Ansel – again I was literally shaking I was so happy to see someone I wish I could have talked to them more… I hope I feel this way all year – Dear Leonard Dear Bob Dear Emil!

1941 Fri Techniques wasn’t nearly as terrifying as I had expected. Its going to be a fun class. Leonard only missed on in the test.

1942 SAT OH ECSTASY! – I’M HAPPY; PHENOMENAL, AFTER BEING absolutely ABYSOMAL THIS MORNING… JOHN and I PICKED OUT BOB PRESINCK for PEGGY… HOPE SHE LIKES IT… WENT OVER TO SEE HER, THEN, later, BOB, LEONARD and BILL CAME OVER… LEONARD and I TALKED * BETTER.

1943 SUN We went to Worthington to see Jeannie. She is more beautiful than ever. Will have her baby in a few weeks. She thinks well of Leonard… John drove us up – back in the rain. Here, afterward, we had coffee, sandwiches, + cake… We had so little time alone together. Oh God.

AUGUST 7

1939 Well, B. Barron got along without me to-night! (And I thought I really might go) – Mother + I went down town to-day saw the circus parade. She bought a rose wool skirt + material for a dress! I worry about the yearbook – I wish I’d get going on it!

1940 Merely muddled around today – I’ve got about 5 letters to write – keep procrastinating – Leonard identified my cologne today. I’m surprised he remembered it – I hope it doesn’t rain for the picnic…

1941 Thurs Do tell, I really got here! Eleanor had been worried about me, of course! – We ate at the Town House. Sat up on the roof + talked tonight

1942 FRI Oh BABY, WE’RE crazy… WENT HUNTING FROGS WITH AL NORLIN, R.H.#, S.J.M. and MISTER Payne. WE COULDN’T FIND A SINGLE one! – I GOT CAUGHT ON A BARBED WIRE FENCE and GOT MY FEET all MUDDY… WENT with PEGGY FOR HER MUSIC LESSON AND LISTENED TO sharp ECSTASY of Walkyrie… ALWAYS THINK of LEONARD. WENT SWIMMING W. DAVID…

1943 SAT.

AUGUST 6

1939 11:30 I’ve finally found out the best way to escape responsibilities is to face them! Finally settled down + made a few sketches for G. – However I don’t want to be a comic strip artist. (Whoever it was called last night did not call tonight!)

1940 11:45 Hunk + I went up to Del Rapids to the dance… I can’t understand the boy – he is so nice. I don’t know why he dates someone as quiet + dopey as I was tonight – Guess I’m getting on in years…

1941 Wed Saw Mus. of M.A.A. – Met Igor P – Migosh whata night. – I was deluged with attention (must have been lack of competition) John M. promised to write me – wonder if he will? ?

1942 THURS WOW… BUT I’M tired… COULDN’T EVEN DO THOSE BLAME DISHES… HAD GELS over FOR DINNER… NESSA, SHIRLEE, PEGGY and D.J… IT WAS A DARN GOOD MEAL… WORE  my WHITE PINAFORE and FELT DOMESTIC… STITCHED A SEAM or TWO… PINKED ‘EM tonight… EXPECTED THE FELLAS TO come OVER; DIDN’T…

1943 FRI.

AUGUST 5

1939 11:30 Wouldn’t you know? Just because Eleanor + I go to a movie a man calls me! – oh well, we had a swell time – saw Mickey Rooney – and came home + ate our heads off (after we (the whole family it was Dad’s birthday) had a chicken dinner down town). I AM THROUGH WITH MY JOB – HURRAY!

1940 Got a letter from Mlle – want a picture in the suit for Oct issue I hope I get in – Bette Edwards, Bette H., D.J. + I crashed Emil’s, Bob’s, Al’s + Leonard’s dinner tonight – Got something to eat, Did the dishes!

1941 Tues DOING SOME THINKING – DANGEROUS. – ADMITTED, FINALLY, NOTHING MUCH THRILLS ME ANYMORE! – OR DOES IT – MAYBE I’VE JUST GROWN UP – SAW MLLE – S DIDN’T CALL – PARTED WITH $3 to A CHARMING FELLA FOR MAGS. – W/ WHOM I MISSED A DATE – HE CALLED AT 6:30 + I WAS OUT COCKTAILING WITH L.Z.A. – SAW W on the Rhine – Lucilla’s husband was up to see me tonight! – I refused!

1942 WED WELL, I COULD WORK AT THE Argus, I GUESS – BUT I’M WAITING TO HEAR FROM MR. WITMER – [WHOM I WROTE today]… MET JEAN Gibson FOR LUNCH. BOB AND I HAD COKES WITH PEGGY BLATHERWICK… BILL + TRESS and I ATE AT THE PALACE… (hm – I GUESS I MUST HAVE STAYED HOME tonight!)

AUGUST 3

1939 11:05 B-Little sister booklet got down to the printers today (among other things) Ray has left – I’m rather relieved He was rather nice + he had very blue eyes – Marg + Nessa, Peg + M + I went on a picnic out at Gitchenee tonight. We had a portable radio. (Full moon)

1940 11:30 I am just a little fed up with this non-love life of mine… I am just a bit more than a little mad at Bill dating every body but me (Hazel twice this week) I think I’ll carry on from where I left off at the 1st date I had with him – He has it coming… I don’t know exactly how I’ll do it all I want is a chance

1941 Sun – Gee, I really wish this were next week at this time and all this hub-bub were over! Mike left this morning. Quite appalling exodus.

1942 MON CUT OUT MY GREEN DRESS TONIGHT… Then BILL + R.H #  + MISTER Payne CAME. I WASHED BOB’S HAIR FOR HIM. I SEWED, WHILE THEY contentedly READ MAGAZINES… THEY’RE CRAZY… THE SHAMPOO MADE Leonard A LITTLE JEALOUS, I THINK… REN SAYS THAT DAYTON’S IS STILL AVAILABLE. ALSO ARGUS. N.Y?

1943 Tuesday

JULY 29

1939 Sat 12:15 Was “dummy” through practically a whole evening of bridge this evening at Peggy’s – ate popcorn + coke. And I do want to be thin this fall!

1940 9:45 I’m determined to lose 10 pounds – (I’m hungry right now, going up to the lake yesterday shot the balance of that 5 lbs right to pieces… Hell. The irony- of- it-all – Hunk didn’t call about the dance again – He must have been utterly crushed the other night. Bill called tonight. I said no go.

1941 12:00 Waited tables this morning 7:45 – after 4 hrs of sleep. – Fun!  - Getting to know everyone now it’s time to leave! Show went very well tonight. Gee, Mr. Cisney is grand!

1942 WED WAS OVER TO PEGGY’S TO MEET THE Sargent SHE WAS RAVING ABOUT… Gee, WHAT A PAIN… AFTER FOUR BOURBON COKES, HOWEVER; I WAS VERY AMIABLE. WE TALKED French, RAPIDLY, AND HE WAS A DARN GOOD DANCER… PEG HAS gobs OF RECORDS… IT STARTED TO Deluge, SO MRS. BELL IN WAS PROPERLY hysterical… I WAS QUITE AMUSED… ha. SAW This Above All; MOTHER HAD “CLUB”-

1943 THURS HAD DINNER WITH Billy + Frank. And WAS GLAD TO; EVEN TOOK OFF MY HOSE TO BETTER ENJOY MYSELF. I FELT FOUL WENT TO THE DOCTOR HAD MY THROAT PAINTED… I GAGGED. WE SAW the FRED WARING SHOW… IT WAS GOOD. PUT RUTH ON THE TRAIN FOR HOME – ha!

JULY 17

1939  Monday And Duke Ellington with Leonard and I wasn’t expecting too much of the evening… It turned out super + + + - Thank goodness, I didn’t see Ray there – Leonard was certainly no slouch – I like him – He said, when he brought me to the door that he could not figure me out – I wasn’t like any other date he’d had out – Maybe I made a hit ? ? ?

1940 Wed W the rat didn’t call as he said he would tonight… I suppose he will care tomorrow when I not ready to go to the dance… I am just furious – Spence came over this afternoon and “nailed me down” for a date for Friday – He is so supremely conceited

1941 Well, darling *, I wish I could have about an hour alone with you tonight. I really need it. Morale was nil… Rained… Phooey I loathe the play I’m in next week. *Leonard.

1942 FRI WENT TO THE [DANCE with DAVID crossed out) … MOVIE Noontide WITH VIRGINIA, PEGGY, J.C. + “JUKE”. GOLLY, I’M GLAD I’M POOR IF THAT’S WHAT MONEY DOES FOR YOU… hmmm, I LAK – JEAN GABIN..

1943 SAT OH-H-H, WAS I SEEK WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE Barbizon POOL…! DIDN’T THINK I’D BE ABLE TO GET HOME; I RILLY didn’t. “Edith” AND I DID THE HOUSEWORK. WE GOT ALONG FINE… I WROTE HOME, THAT’S ALL READ Point Counterpoint FELT PRETTY BAD.

 

JULY 16

1939 Sunday 12:10 After exactly a month – Ray called up - ! He is going to work on the R.R. again – We went to the race in Luverne to-night… I felt rather odd - + didn’t say much… on the way back he asked me if I could possible like him a little, again – He said he couldn’t explain why he hadn’t called me before, etc – It was the old thrill once more –

1940 Painted woodwork, etc today – (If I don’t get to work + make some money - ) Went to N.W. Passage w/ Hunk… He looked so nice tonight – all 200 pounds of him… I thought about B.C. most of the day… wonder if he’s serious… Should I go out w/ him tomorrow ? ? ?

1940 ? Hell, I wish I were home. Got a lousy Cockney Part in Fannie – which is a very dully play – Wish I were in Cradle Song!

1941 THURS WENT TO THE DANCE WITH DAVID… WE WERE ALL OUT SWIMMING – SHIRLEY, BOB, RON, PEGGY – etc. – AND I SAW HIM, THEN… HE’S VERY NICE, I THINK… AND I MUST HAVE made AN IMPRESSION on HIM.

1942 FRI OH DUST + ASHES… I’M INFINITELY DEPRESSED. BUT BETTER, WHEN I CAME HOME AND FOUND A LETTER. HE STILL DOESN’T KNOW! ( I THINK I WORRY MORE THAN HE DOES!) ALL DAY I HURRIED AND DIDN’T GET A CHANCE TO WRITE. 

JULY 12

1939 10:10 Worked 6 hrs today, walked 3 times (6 miles) + went swimming We go almost every noon – tonight, Mother + I have been talking about fixing over Wilmer’s old room for me- I hope I can do it

1940 Friday 10:30 – I was seriously unhappy this afternoon – mostly because I was tired, I guess. Bill + I went out to his folks house (to feed the dog!) – He wants an “all day” date for Sunday. I agreed, but I don’t know.

1941 2:15 Thank God that show’s over. – insects are buzzing in my ear. – a skunk lurks around our door-sill – we had a wild time getting home – I feel in character for my next part!

1942 SUN “MET” DAVID… (THAT WAS RILLY A SMOOTH PICK-UP, IF EVER I SAW ONE) – SHIRLEY, PEG + I WENT SWIMMING – MAYBE IT WAS MY RED SUIT. WE HAD SUPPER OVER AT PEG’S, THE CAME OVER + SAT IN OUR BACK YARD; JOHN K + J. de R. CAME OVER + STAYED and TALKED TO ME…

1943 MON Leonard wrote a dark, resentful letter, I hate his having to feel that way. Oh God, please let him have a chance… Had to come home this noon I felt so bad. Better, as the day wore on. We had steak.

JULY 10

1939 Mon. This morning I had $75 in my purse. Now it holds a quarter… I paid $50 out at school (I get awfully depressed about my tuition) – tonight Peg + Nessa + I saw Lawrence Olivier – In the L. Shop we were sure 3 men had some dark plans! – I got Iver to walk with us down the alley where the care was pkd.

1940 Wed. Worked all day – Bob + Del + I walked out (in a deluge of rain) to see Leonard – Blossom was “entertaining” him – I wouldn’t be at all surprised she’d land him – What determination.

1941 Gee, Harwich isn’t nearly as much fun – old opera house – fire trap. – Going back in station wagon was fun – radio. – breeze + stuff

1942 FRI WENT TO LEMARS WITH BETTY JOHNSON… SAW MRS. REEVES… I HOPE BETTY STAYS THERE, IF SHE GETS the JOB… TALKED W KLUCKHOHN. (HE THINKS I SHOULD GO TO Graduate SCHOOL!) WE SAW LEE off FOR MLPS… GUS LENT US HIS CONVERTIBLE… WE WENT OUT TO Billy’s AND DANCED… LEONARD STAYED – HE’S GOING TO MINNEAPOLIS TOMORROW… THERE WAS music!

1943 SAT A darling letter form Leonard I love. Ruth Bach + Agnes Hyde coming. Cleaned the apartment. Read + napped. Didn’t mail my package until tonight. And saw, George Krikorian with anozzer woman!

 

JULY 3

1939 10:00 I’m poohed out. Really swam all morning… I saw Dick for a moment… he smiled… I’m reading the “Fountain”

1940 11? Phooey to Eppley Hotels Inc. – espec. the housekeeper… Leonard is okay – went for a ride w/ Spence – It was darn big of him to tell me to go ahead + do anything if I got a chance to.

1941 ? Had my first fencing lesson today – Wow – muscles I didn’t know I had – stiff – Missed a rehearsal Cisney was mad – Phooey. It’s raining (Wish I were home – won’t admit it)

1942 FRI GOT A NEW swimming SUIT – RED! JANTZEN * WE-ALL (Morgan Haakenson, Ronnie Nelson) WENT SWIMMING ABOUT 5:00… WORKED for WILMER THIS AFTERNOON… VIC WANTED ME TO GOT TO Boo Barn.  I HAVEN’T GOT that DESPERATE, yet… WENT PEGGY’S MUSIC LESSON w/ HER. LEONARD + BILL + R.H.# + I were OVER TO D.J.’S

1943 SAT I was bushed out today… But cleaned apt, baked a cake, had Bill for lunch. Didn’t go down town. (I’ll have to soon.) Rested Bill + I went to Calvin’s for dinner – to R.C.A, bldg and to Café Society. And did have fun. 

JUNE 30

1939 10:30 Still no check! – Eleanor + I went “calling” this Evening – Rosalind + Ward have a charming apt. We told Ella everything we could think of –

1940 12:45 Wrote a short novel of a letter to Eleanor today. Did little else except go to “The Mortal Storm” with Bill and in spite of my determination – worry about Leonard… I am so desperately sorry for him if it is what Virginia + I half way decided last night. I’ll pray for him every night.

1941 Gee, maybe I won’t be at Auggie after all next year – Got a letter from Ren saying I made a good impression on Mr. Witmer – And one from the Boston Store in Milwaukee saying I was “rating” in Mlle’ s Cover Contest – some panic! Wrote a coupla letters – was lazy –

1942 TUES ALL-SCHOOL picnic. SHIRLEY + I WENT; ASSIMILATED D.J. + Peggy. WE WENT TO Jungle BOOK AFTERWARD. Technicolor… OF COURSE RAN INTO Leonard + BILL AFTERWARD. WE CAME HOME WITHOUT THEM, however.

1943 WED Thank God, Herman’s gone for a while. He is too demanding. We did have a nice dinner at Nancy Land’s; nice walk back through the park – someone called from Princeton. I can’t imagine who. Couldn’t get them back.

 

JUNE 27

1939 10:45 Went out to school today to get started. I’m rather floored by the size of the job. Peggy, Nessa, Marguerite + I went on a steak fry. The park was full of 100’s of lightening bugs

1940 1:00 I am so very stupid. If only I had had this damn m – out beforehand… It would have been no trick at all… As it was I didn’t start until nearly 11 this morning – consequently didn’t finish until 12 tonight… (Now I won’t feel I have a right to ask $15) – I have a swollen Jaw – I am a mess and I think about Leonard entirely too much.

1941 – TSK – TSK – BROKE A RULE! NOT QUITE AS MUCH FUN AS I HAD EXPECTED – HENRY IS A NIZE BOY – BUT YOUNG – WENT SWIMMING TODAY – FUN – GOT A BANG OUT OF THE BOYS IN WHATALIFE

1942 SAT Was reasonably energetic… met Donna for lunch… Looked for a bathing skirt. No luck  * DJ + I went over to Shirley’s. Just as we were discussing the “boy” (Leonard specifically) in they walked

1943 SUN AFT – WE ARE DRAPED AROUND THE APT., MELTING… I’M VAGUELY NERVOUS… BUT NOT BADLY… I’M GOING TO TRY + BE more ORGANIZED… * WE HAD DINNER at HAMBURGER HEAVEN. I ENJOYED IT + (fore-got dessert). Sully + I went to Devil + Miss Jones.

 

JUNE 21

1939 11:30 Well, Monday night’s glammer boy has left for Minneapolis – I’ll probably never see him again – But it was perfect – I don’t know if I’ll ever have a date with Ray either, for that matter – I may get another job at school!

1940 12:00 Clara came in today + we rewrote first act… I suppose we must get it revised + sent to Krause… The incredible happened… Jo, Peg + I went swimming + so did Bill ! – He was marvelous… Poised, friendly, assured.

1941 Sun – In Chicago. – uneventful trip – didn’t get “The Waltz” learned. –

1942 Sun God, I’m a bitch. I don’t deserve to have anything nice happen to me – like going to the dance tomorrow. Saw Tortilla Flats.

1943 MON (Evidently a dull day! I can’t remember) I wrote to Leonard again – (heard from him. He’s probably going this week) took it out to mail. Walked down + got us cupcakes.
