1939 11:00 Sunday Tonight I squashed a centipede on the wall… I wish I had the opportunity to squash Hitler in the same decisive manner. – An English passenger boat was torpedoed off the coast of Ireland tonight. 1400 passengers… The president spoke tonight assuring the people of our neutrality. 1940 I’m afraid there will be nothing very sensational to record these next 9 months… Every thing seems like it will evolve itself into sort of a pleasant, but busy rut… Tonight I went to Ladies’ Auxiliary with Mrs. Reeves –
