SEPTEMBER 15

1939 – I’ll always remember the crazy fun I’ve had to-night every time I see a watermelon – remember how we (Donna Jean + I) carried off a couple from the all-school watermelon bust and ended up (after walking all over town with them) eating one over at Broadlawn cemetery with Carp + Spence.

1940 11:00 Nuts, I’m going to bed – a week’s planning is only such a small dent in that junk… I must work all week… I went to church with Mrs. Reeves – she invited me to dinner (boiled, New England) um, it was good… studied a little – Anxious to see Eleanor hope she got home okay –

1941 Mon Even when I’m busy – like today – Art 1 – Art 33 – Art 21 – I can’t keep Leonard out of my mind… If I could only be sensible… But, I can’t. – Couldn’t concentrate on my History of Art for tomorrow.

1942 TUES WORE MY GREEN CORDUROY TO Jack T… IT WAS DREADFULLY hot… LEONARD WAS very QUIET… MAYBE BECAUSE STAN + CO WERE IN THE OUTFIT… WE DIDN’T TRADE A DANCE… THE MOOSIC WAS PERFECT… Even, THEY PLAYED “MY SWEET EMBRACEABLE YOU.”

1943 WED MOTHER + ELEANOR + I WENT TO QUIET PLEASE Murder at the Orpheum. (because Leonard liked it) We won .50 playing Screens! Such fun. I have no cavities. – Just must have them cleaned… We got ice cream cones on the way home.

AUGUST 2

1939 11:25 Managed to accomplish quite a bit today + not mind it!) In fact, I enjoyed myself! I’ve got to finish out at school, this wk. (Leonard was out today)

1940 (ditto – very much so – acutely so in fact) Well darn Bill – Clara saw him today. He has been out with Hazel! Got some borders fixed for Fosters finally – Bob, Dick H. + I talked, sang, rounds – listened to D. play Boogie Woogie He is brilliant. Too bad Leonard missed out. Spence was out again.

1941 Sat Wow – what a day. Helped strike 3:00 set tonight – talked with Barney – put on my formal + went to the party – sleeping with Lois tonight. Steven has our room

1942 SUN WE HAD 2 awfully SWEET SOLDIERS TO DINNER…MOTHER “PICKED THEM UP” AT CHURCH… WORE MY NOO PINAFORE… WENT UP TO DELL RAPIDS WITH David… PLEASANT enuff AFTERNOON; BUT I SHOULD HAVE LET WELL ENOUGH ALONE… WE GOT BORED BEFORE THE EVENING WAS over. I WAS sad.

1943 MON

JULY 19

1939 Wed Nessa ragged me all day about my Mon. night experience in the backseat – I’m still having no serious pangs of conscience – tonight I went to Denis’s Concert – Ray’s suggestion (he was selling tickets) And who should sit beside me but Leonard – (I hope Ray saw him!)

1940 Well I hope I fixed Spence… We drove up to Luvesne – I was perfectly okay except I only said about 3 words all evening. – If he calls again, I swear I’m not going out with him… I saw a light in Bill’s window when we went by.

1941 ? Well, Jim certainly doesn’t waste any time… I suppose he figured he might as well play for the highest stakes… I was surprised – Just naïve, I guess. After the show we went down to White House. Sat on the beach – breezy – dark – swell.

1942 SUN WE WERE OVER TO DINNER AT Bryant's this AFTERNOON. D.J. and I SUN-BATHED, LATER. THEN WENT OUT TO THE COTTAGE AFTER A COKE. JOHN + WILBER TOOK THE HARDERS’ TESTS over THERE – THEY CAME HOME w/ ME. DAVE WAS OVER AT 11:00 (I’D JUST GOTTEN UP – TO SEE IF I HADN’T RELENTED!)

1943 MON LEONARD WRITES THAT HE’S BEEN ACCEPTED FOR A S.TP. – WON’T GO – BECAUSE OF EMINENCE OF SHIPPING + CONSEQUENT FREEZING of PERSONNEL… IT ISN’T RIGHT… DAMN… I FEEL BEATEN… ELEANOR AND I WENT TO “MORE THE MERRIER”… I COULDN’T CONCENTRATE…

JULY 17

1939  Monday And Duke Ellington with Leonard and I wasn’t expecting too much of the evening… It turned out super + + + - Thank goodness, I didn’t see Ray there – Leonard was certainly no slouch – I like him – He said, when he brought me to the door that he could not figure me out – I wasn’t like any other date he’d had out – Maybe I made a hit ? ? ?

1940 Wed W the rat didn’t call as he said he would tonight… I suppose he will care tomorrow when I not ready to go to the dance… I am just furious – Spence came over this afternoon and “nailed me down” for a date for Friday – He is so supremely conceited

1941 Well, darling *, I wish I could have about an hour alone with you tonight. I really need it. Morale was nil… Rained… Phooey I loathe the play I’m in next week. *Leonard.

1940 11? Phooey to Eppley Hotels Inc. – espec. the housekeeper… Leonard is okay – went for a ride w/ Spence – It was darn big of him to tell me to go ahead + do anything if I got a chance to.

1941 ? Had my first fencing lesson today – Wow – muscles I didn’t know I had – stiff – Missed a rehearsal Cisney was mad – Phooey. It’s raining (Wish I were home – won’t admit it)

JUNE 22

1939 11:45 Practically wore myself out finishing the last sleeve of my sweater… I really put in a day – washed floors cleaned davenport, etc. – Tonight I played Rhapsody in Blue over about 3 times… It made me lonesome.

1940 Sunday Rainy… dark… windy… cold… lonesome. I was absolutely worthless all day. I tried to sleep – couldn’t… Yet I was glad to be alone… Was out w/ Spence. He made me feel so ashamed… I haven’t been doing a thing; he works 11 hrs a day.

1942 Mon 12:45 – I had a date with Joe Johnson tonight. He is swell, but slightly alien to my nature, I’m afraid. In a way, I hope you called Leonard. In a way – not.

1943 TUES GEE, I’M TIRED… N-H-H-H-G. [PEARL GETS ALL THE PHONE calls!] … JARV DIDN’T call… HOPE HE HASN’T BEEN SHIPPED, yet. I HAVEN’T GOT STRENGTH FOR ANYTHING BUT BED. WROTE Leonard  LETTER ABOUT July Fourth… I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT.

JUNE 3

1939 Saturday Our house is certainly Bedlam on Saturdays – but its fun – hair, cloth. washing, cooking, getting ready to go out, etc. – Tonight about 20 couples had a dinner-dance – I was too tired to have much fun –

1940 1:30 all the time, I keep thinking about Leonard… if he meant what he wrote… if he did, why he hasn’t done something about it… if he is too young, etc., etc. – Class day this morning… sweltering… Senior gals ate lunch down town… went to lousy banquet w. Spence

1941 11:00 RAIN! WELL, AFTER HECTIC STUFF, WE (US FAMILY) ARE FINALLY COMPARATIVELY PEACEFULL – WE SLUFFED AROUND FIELD’S THIS AFTERNOON. HAD HELLUVA TIME GETTING SETTLED FOR DINNER –
